HOSPITAL RADIO
SOUTH TYNESIDE

About Us

Hospital Radio, as we know it started out as a few dedicated radio hams and enthusiasts way back in the early in 1950’s. A gentleman by the name of John Tyzack, who would later become our founder member, would fill up his car with all manner of radio ham equipment and head out into the evening to broadcast from all kinds of locations up and down the region.

One of the locations popular with the radio enthusiasts was the “Grotto”, a local watering hole at Marsden, but the most popular site to broadcast from was the Trinity House and car park in South Shields. This is where they become known as Radio Trinity House in a round 1953.

A station of sorts was set-up for the Ingham Infirmary in 1956 and would now be know as “Radio Ingham”., which provided such services as live football commentary for local matches, along with the popular request programmes.

The station lasted up until 1984 when the station was relocated to the towns Harton General Hospital, (later to be known as the South Tyneside District Hospital) and then changed the name of the station accordingly to Hospital Radio South Tyneside.

It stayed there, next door to the old chapel until 1991 when we moved into the new hospital (Ingham Wing) where we currently reside.

In 2005 a computerised playout system was introduced.  Following an Awards for All grant in 2006, the Myriad playout system was purchased and HRST could truly broadcast 24 hours a day, providing South Tyneside District Hospital with 168 hours per week of information and entertainment.
